WORKSHOP Learn About Ofrendas: A Cultural Tradition in partnership with Casa Ramirez

One of the most important components of Dia de los Muertos is the ofrenda. Learn why ofrendas are created, the symbology of ofrendas and how to make one of your own in your home. The workshop will be taught by Chrissie Dickerson Ramirez, owner of Casa Ramirez and the artist Lizbeth Ortiz who has created ofrendas around the US. She created an ofrenda with residents of New York City after personally witnessing the tragedy of 9-11. Most recently, she created one with the community of Uvalde to memorialize those killed in the school shooting.

FREE EVENT. Limited to 30 participants.

The KPMG TALK The World In Between – Ancient Roots of Día de los Muertos in partnership with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

The days surrounding Día de los Muertos transcend worlds: the worlds of the living and the dead, the worlds of Europe and Latin America, the worlds of today and yesterday. Día de los Muertos is a loving, glorious celebration of life and death.

Día de los Muertos originated among the ancient Mesoamerican peoples, who emphasized honoring their ancestors. Today’s commemoration blends indigenous celebrations with teachings of Catholicism.

Discover the rituals and the multifold meanings of a tradition when the veil separating worlds is thin, when perhaps it is possible to symbolically commune with loved ones on the night that their souls return for a visit.

A dance performance by Ambassadors International Ballet Folklorico will take place thirty minutes prior to the start of the talk. Please join us to welcome the start of another year and to remember and celebrate those who have come before us.
